Quick answer

Wheel alignment measures the angles of all four wheels on an alignment rig and adjusts them back to the manufacturer figures. It corrects a car that pulls to one side, has an off-centre steering wheel or wears its tyres unevenly. The rig is workshop equipment, so this is done at a partner workshop and not at the roadside.

Range Rover and Land Rover

On a Range Rover

Range Rovers on 20 to 22 inch wheels run wide, low-profile tyres that are costly to replace, and a small toe error can wear the inner edge where you will not see it without looking under the car. On cars with air suspension the alignment should be measured at normal ride height, not in access or off-road height.

All Land Rover models

How it works

How Wheel Alignment works

Tell us the car and what you notice, including any recent kerb strike

  2. 02

Book a slot, or have the car collected if you would not drive it

  3. 03

The car is measured and any worn or bent part is reported before adjusting

  4. 04

Angles are set and you receive the printout

Signs you need it

  1. 01 The car drifts left or right on a straight, flat road
  2. 02 The steering wheel sits crooked when driving straight
  3. 03 One edge of a tyre is worn smooth while the rest has tread
  4. 04 You hit a kerb or pothole hard, or just fitted new tyres

Wheel Alignment questions

More questions answered

What is the difference between alignment and balancing?

Alignment sets the angles the wheels point at and fixes pulling and uneven wear. Balancing adds weights to the wheel and fixes vibration at speed.

How often should alignment be checked?

With every new set of tyres, after any hard impact, and whenever the car starts to pull. A yearly check is reasonable otherwise.

The car still pulls after alignment. Why?

Common causes are a tyre with internal damage, uneven pressures, a sticking brake caliper or a bent suspension part. Swapping the front tyres side to side is a quick test.
