Clutch replacement removes the gearbox to fit a new friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing on a manual or automated-manual car. The flywheel is inspected at the same time and replaced or resurfaced if it is scored or has play. It is a workshop job that usually takes a day.

Clutch Replacement questions
How long does a clutch last?
It depends far more on driving than on age. Heavy traffic, riding the pedal and hill starts wear it quickly, while motorway use barely touches it.
Do I have to replace the flywheel too?
Not always. It is checked once the gearbox is off, and a dual-mass flywheel with excess play or heat marks should be changed while access is open.
Can I keep driving on a slipping clutch?
For a short while, gently. It gets worse quickly, can damage the flywheel, and eventually leaves the car unable to move.
