Choosing a battery for the Volvo 850
The 850 was built from 1991 to 1998, before start-stop was common, so most examples run a conventional maintenance-free battery. Age matters more than mileage on these cars: cables, terminals and the alternator are worth checking at the same visit.
Saloons like this are daily commuters, and stop-and-go traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road with the AC on full is hard on a battery. A test every spring catches a weak one before it strands you.
What a Volvo needs from its battery
Most modern Volvos take an AGM battery, usually H7 or H8, with H6 on the smaller models. Recent mild hybrids add a 48V battery to the 12V system. The rating is confirmed from the label or the VIN.
Many stop/start Volvos have a small support battery in addition to the main one, and a worn support battery is a frequent reason stop/start stops working. On the current XC90 and several related models the main battery is in the boot.
