What a Tesla needs from its battery
A Tesla has no starter motor, but it still depends on a low-voltage battery to power the screen, the door handles and the contactors that connect the main pack. When that battery goes, the car can be fully charged and still not wake up.
Battery type and size
Earlier Model S, X, 3 and Y cars use a compact 12V AGM battery. Newer cars, roughly from late 2021 depending on the model, use a small lithium low-voltage battery that runs at about 16V and is specific to Tesla. The technician identifies which one the car has from the VIN before coming out.
Worth knowing before fitting
The car normally warns on screen that the low-voltage battery needs replacing soon, and that warning should not be left for weeks. A Tesla must not be used to jump start another car, and the lithium low-voltage unit cannot be swapped for an ordinary 12V battery.
